The human spirit wants to soar, to be free of its earthly chains but the chain is always too short and heaven too far. So we create our own mythology, olympian in power, cosmic in scope, and thus soar vicariously through art. The ideal becomes a refuge from reality or through adornment, its sublimation. It is an antidote to personal significance. And when this fails, we can still win by learning to laugh. |
